Josh is a shy and unpopular eight-year-old who starts to open up when he develops a relationship with an imaginary friend named Z. His parents, Beth and Kevin, consider their son's fascination with his new companion as harmless until Josh begins to develop behavioral problems that lead to his suspension from school. As Josh's creepy behavior deepens, Beth faces the demons of her past and realizes to her horror that Z might not be make-believe after all.
