Political satire is tricky. If you approach your target too meekly, you run the risk of not leaving an impression. Hammer at that target too hard, though, and you can crush it beyond recognition. The new Netflix original, War Machine, takes the blunt hammer approach. It’s broad (sometimes cartoonishly so) and a bit all over the place, but it still manages to occasionally sting and leave a welt.

Political satire meets military analysis in this film starring Brad Pitt and Anthony Michael Hall.

After a sluggish and chaotic start, War Machine finds its groove and becomes its own thing: a mordant, cleareyed critique of American war-making that is all the more devastating for being affectionately drawn.

Brad Pitt plays a General McChrystal-like figure in David Michod's satirical war film, co-starring Ben Kingsley and Tilda Swinton.

Examples of absurdly misguided thinking--on the part of the U.S. military and the government--stack up quickly, and Michôd tracks it all with a sly wink.
2889d ago
The smug satire War Machine can’t wipe that look off its face.

It’s funny and sad and weary and wise, which feels just about right for now. War Machine is a weird, unsettled movie for a weird, unsettled time.

War Machine is all about the waste of war, and while it's not taking a hard stance either way, Pitt's entourage makes for a watchable modern look into conflict.

The new Netflix movie “War Machine” is half dark, deliciously topical political satire and half somber portrait of a flailing counterinsurgency effort.

If the clichéd definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, this savage irony applies to both the resolute war makers and the unyielding filmmakers going all in.

Writer-director David Michôd's film renders existential crises of American entitlement dull and tedious.

I’d love to see a true satire written by the incredibly smart David Michod. “War Machine,” now on Netflix, isn’t really a satire.

Adaptation of award-winning Rolling Stone article about General McChrystal finds the movie star chewing the scenery.

Based on real-life events, David Michôd’s take on the war in Afghanistan plays for laughs and misses the mark.
2889d ago
Flat satire, muddled writing, an unconvincing lead performance and all that blah-blah on the soundtrack sink this War on Terror comedy.
2889d ago
Brad Pitt is cartoonishly miscast as the U.S. general delusional enough to believe he can win the war in Afghanistan in big-budget Netflix misfire.
2889d ago
Brad Pitt's dreary Netflix war satire is an irrelevant, alpha-male misfire.
