Valerian is at times so mind-meltingly beautiful and strange that I’m still not sure I didn’t just dream it all.

If nothing else, the Alpha seems to be a physical manifestation of Besson’s subconscious, a place populated with oddities and eccentric costumes, where beautiful female creatures, alien and human alike, are preyed upon by corrupt males.

The difference between the film and its equally expensive contemporaries is Luc Besson’s playful, childlike naïveté.

While “Valerian” and its gigantic canvas may make ‘Star Wars’ look like child’s play, the movie and its flat characters still cause one to yearn for Lucas’ fun, but stock archetypes and sometimes wooden line-readings.

The casting of Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne as the barely legal special operatives tasked to save the universe aims to defy standard notions of what makes a movie hero.
2831d ago
In the mid-26th century, special agents Valerian (DeHaan) and Laureline (Delevingne) must deal with a mysterious threat to the cosmically cosmopolitan deep-space metropolis of Alpha, home to millions of lifeforms from a thousand different worlds — while also dealing with their growing attraction to each other.

Valerian focuses on a larger sci-fi spectacle populated with unfleshed characters and some of the worst dialogue Earth has to offer.

To say that “Valerian” is a science-fiction epic doesn’t quite do it justice. Imagine crushing a DVD of “The Phantom Menace” into a fine powder, tossing in some Adderall and Ecstasy and a pinch of cayenne pepper and snorting the resulting mixture while wearing a virtual reality helmet in a Las Vegas karaoke bar. Actually, that sounds like too much fun, but you get the idea.
