Alice Racine (Noomi Rapace) lives a quiet life in London. Once the best interrogator in the CIA, Alice failed to unlock a prisoner in time to save the lives of several people, prompting her to leave the field and become a caseworker. When the CIA apprehends a suspect who is believed to have direct knowledge of an imminent terrorist attack, Alice is called in unexpectedly. She is successful in 'unlocking' the suspect but before she can fully pass it off to her superiors, she gets a call from her old colleague at Langley. Quickly realizing she has been set-up, she narrowly escapes, and finds herself on the run. Knowing the CIA has been compromised, Alice must turn to the few she can trust as she searches for those responsible and tries to prevent a deadly biological attack on the city.

Unlocked feels like a 1970s-style conspiracy thriller, which makes it a perfect fit for the 76-year-old Apted, whose wonderfully varied career includes the James Bond flick, The World Is Not Enough.

Years on from 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,' Noomi Rapace is still ready for action, though this middling thriller lags behind her.

You’re better off watching ‘Homeland’ reruns than ‘Unlocked’.

I suppose this went down easily enough for me because I grew up with this kind of stuff, and can surrender to it as a kind of cinematic comfort food. But still. For those not so inclined, the entertainment value could conceivably be derived from the brisk, no-nonsense direction by Michael Apted, and the talents of what they used to call “an all-star cast”.

If “Unlocked” had just been an ordinary piece of direct-to-video action fodder—the kind of film directed by some anonymous hack and featuring a cast consisting of one or two past-their-prime stars, a starlet or two of no particular distinction and either a wrestler or a rapper—I might have felt a little more forgiving towards it.

Traumatised by a terrorist attack in Paris, CIA analyst Alice Racine (Noomi Rapace) has left the field and is working a desk job in London. Until chatter is picked up revealing that a biological strike on the city is imminent.

With its dull mixture of indifferently staged exposition and action, it suggests a primitive side-scrolling video game.
