Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Steve Coogan, and Rebecca Hall make a riveting quartet in Oren Moverman's adaptation of the Herman Koch novel about a dark-hearted dinner gathering.

Writer-director Oren Moverman's drama about family dysfunction and political cover-ups continues Richard Gere's winning streak.

Indeed the cast and Moverman are all on immense if divisively heightened form right up to the irresolute, overwrought ending. But how else could a meal so massive and rich end but with a dose of indigestion? “History is over,” Paul preaches at us at one point, “Everything is happening this second.” And in this scabrous drama-comedy-satire-psychological-horror hybrid, almost to the point of breathless incoherence at times, everything always is.

Two couples meet for a tense meal as they dance around the elephant in the room: whether to cover up what their sons did, or make them take responsibility.

It’s a dark brew, and Moverman sustains a mood of increasing tension for most of the film, but a few too many times we are flung back into another fractured, revelation-seeking flashback, and the tautness that was building deflates.

Oren Moverman (“The Messenger”) overserves the ideas in this topical thriller-satire.

On paper, writer-director Oren Moverman’s The Dinner has all the ingredients for what should be a four-star feast. But from the opening course, it’s clear that something has gone wrong in the kitchen. Moverman, the chef, has tried to make his creation too clever and complicated.

An imperfect but fascinating film, The Dinner's stellar cast delivers a deeply troubling and psychologically complex treatment of class and family.

Despite frequent flashbacks and Bobby Bukowski’s richly dimensional photography, the movie has a static, stagy look that amplifies the oppressiveness of its increasingly unpleasant exchanges.

Moverman's previous films include "The Messenger" and "Rampart," both very good, and he co-wrote "Love & Mercy" (the terrific Beach Boys biopic) and "I'm Not There" (the Bob Dylan fantasia), proving his skill with complicated narrative structures.

Laura Linney, Rebecca Hall, Richard Gere and Steve Coogan star in a dull, shouty, unconvincing film about four people discussing their children over a fancy meal.
