Henry (Jason Sudeikis) and Penny (Jessica Biel) are a New Orleans couple very much in love, until tragedy strikes and Henry is forced to rebuild. Quite literally, it turns out. After he befriends a tough street teen (Maisie Williams), he helps her construct the raft she'll use to sail across the Atlantic in search of her long lost father.

Cloyingly sentimental and annoyingly whimsical, director Bill Purple’s The Book of Love is one of those movies that all-too-neatly tries to turn grief into personal growth at the audience’s expense. It’s a diabetically sappy big-screen self-help seminar that should have been titled The Book of Schmaltz.

“Sometimes things are better when they’re not perfect, you know?” Maisie Williams’ character wonders dreamily in the mawkish indie drama “The Book of Love.” If only that were true of the film itself.

The Horrible Bosses star is out of his depth in this mawkish weepie about a depressed architect who strikes up a friendship with a homeless girl.

Not even a Justin Timberlake score can lift this sodden collection of forced emotions and overripe indie cliches.
