The jaw drops once the outrageous audacity of (Re)Assignment's premise sinks in. The doctor (Sigourney Weaver) is a brilliant but unhinged cosmetic surgeon, first seen straitjacketed in an interrogation room. Calmly, and not without pride, she recounts to her psychiatrist (Tony Shalhoub) how she got there. A lowlife killer named Frank Kitchen killed her brother, so she took her ultimate revenge. She captured him and conducted full gender-reassignment surgery. Now Frank (Michelle Rodriguez) is forced to face the world as a woman. Confused, pissed off, and as macho as ever, she's out for her own vengeance.

There's little room to talk about the ridiculous, pulpy noir plot of The Assignment, because the performances by Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Rodriguez are such knockouts.

Sigourney Weaver stars as a twisted surgeon and Michelle Rodriguez as the man she turns into a woman in Walter Hill's new noir thriller.

The Assignment is ultimately canny in genre-play and unique in its time, factors that don’t necessarily make it great, but, beyond old-man-auteurism apologia, still hold somewhat of a flame in the modern age.

“The Assignment” is a film that arrives in theaters having already inspired vast outpourings of anger from two groups —the transgender community, which appears to be offended by its very premise, and action buffs, who are put off both by the premise (albeit for different reasons) and what they feel is a lazy execution that fails to offer the requisite thrills.

Walter Hill’s The Assignment is a pulp fairy tale without a clue.

Walter Hill’s legacy of pushing the edges of genre conventions made the prospect of “(Re)Assignment,” at least on paper, potentially dangerous. But the filmmaker’s touch is completely lost here, and the only danger the film winds up posing is to the time spent by those who choose to watch it.

Because Mr. Hill is still, in most respects, Mr. Hill, a lot of the movie is more watchable than it has a right to be. But ultimately, The Assignment ends up being ridiculous even by its own nonsensical standards.

(re)ASSIGNMENT doesn't deserve to be as bland as it is, but that's the reality audiences will unfortunately live out.

The insensitivity of director Walter Hill's The Assignment springs from an over-abundance of caution.

The controversial premise, which sees Michelle Rodriguez playing a man turned into a woman without her consent, sets up a strong contender for 2016’s worst movie.

The handling of trans issues is all wrong here, but then so is everything else in Walter Hill’s shoddy, sloppy revenge tale.
