You're it! Tag is the funniest comedy of the year so far

Though the comedy can get outrageous at times, this loosely true story of five guys caught in a never-ending game of tag makes a poignant statement about friendship.

Jon Hamm and Jeremy Renner are among the stars in a relentlessly funny film about a no-holds-barred game of tag that follows a group of friends into adulthood

The new comedy “Tag” makes a movie outta man-children.

Tag turns male friendship into a petty, elaborate, sometimes amusing game

Tag, unlike too many of its recent ilk, at least bothers to be a movie, rather than a television sketch distended to feature length. The performers don’t seem to have been shoved in front of the camera and instructed to be funny. They have to work for their laughs, and to find coherence as an ensemble.

It doesn’t quite balance its Jackie Chan slapstick with its James L. Brooks sentiments, but it’s a fun way to spend recess

What's even more charming is that some of the sequences are based on real tags from the actual game. Stick around through the credits to see the actual players, and spot the differences (first, there's actually 10 of them, and second, none of them look like Jeremy Renner). But most importantly, see the similiarity: it's goofy, harmless fun between a bunch of pals that grew up but never grew apart.

Jon Hamm, Ed Helms and a crack cast almost save this stunted-adolescence goof about an epic tag game from falling apart
2494d ago
Tag, though, has a predictable woman problem, as its female characters only seem to aspire toward being one of the boys.

“Tag” Is Often Gloriously Dumb, But It Wants to Be More

Studio comedies are rarely the high points of hilarity, but “Tag” comes in a solid year for the genre. Compared to “Game Night” and “Blockers,” for instance, “Tag” feels regressive and weirdly aggressive.

Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm and Hannibal Buress lead the ensemble in this comedy about a group of childhood friends caught up in a decades-long game of tag.

Also, it’s not funny. The only laughs in the movie come from Buress, who I believe must have made a lot of suggestions on dialogue in the rehearsals, because nothing else in the movie is as sharp.
