It’s The Rock vs. the building in an action epic where familiarity doesn’t drown out the fun
2461d ago
Dwayne Johnson and Neve Campbell star in a big, dumb and extremely entertaining riff on Die Hard and The Towering Inferno.

It’s all just Dwayne Johnson getting the job done. There ain’t no mountain, nor skyscraper, high enough for him.
2461d ago
Dwayne Johnson’s humanity provides a firm foundation for a gleefully silly action-thriller.

Hollywood has been showing people hanging off of things for over 100 years, and if that’s something you enjoy, Skyscraper is the pinnacle of this trope, forcing The Rock to dangle, hang, and swing at insane heights above the street time and time again. This is the MO of the whole movie, taking things that have worked before and pumping them up to The Rock-sized spectacle; it’s not too original but it provides what it promises.

No matter how hokey or neatly cyclical things get, Johnson excels.

Writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber's super-tall building boasts 240 stories, and for some reason, this is the one he chose to tell.

The Rock’s Skyscraper promises stupid fun, but falls short
2461d ago
The signature promotional image of “Skyscraper,” the latest Dwayne Johnson summer extravaganza, features the charismatic blockbuster star hanging from a soaring building by only his left hand.

A silly yet watchable action movie sees the world’s most bankable star try to save his family from a building full of fire, terrorists and clunky dialogue
2461d ago
Dwayne Johnson must save his family from a burning building in Rawson Marshall Thurber's 'Die Hard' wannabe.
2461d ago
There are intermittent pleasures, including Ms. Campbell, who seems ready to transition to a new career phase playing hard-hitting maternal types with Mona Lisa smiles. Mostly, though, Skyscraper is about the movie’s other, far more towering figure: Mr. Johnson, a performer whose colossal physicality is strikingly complemented by a delicate expressivity too rarely seen in contemporary blockbusters.

Dwayne Johnson's Skyscraper really wants to be Die Hard and isn't
2461d ago
Dwayne Johnson gets serious in disaster film-meets-‘Die Hard’ blockbuster – and slightly misses the mark
2461d ago
Dwayne Johnson shows off his dramatic acting chops
2461d ago
In the end, it’s hard to rule out any Johnson movie entirely, but Skyscraper is more disappointment than summer sleeper. Given that Thurber and Johnson have more projects in the pipeline together, here’s hoping the two men learn from their missteps and craft a more suitable vehicle for Johnson’s unique set of skills.

Former FBI agent and amputee Will Sawyer (Dwayne Johnson) is hired as security consultant for a state-of-the-art Hong Kong skyscraper called The Pearl. But when this “mile-high Fort Knox” is attacked by terrorists, Will’s family are trapped above a blazing fire on the 96th floor, with Will himself framed for the raid. And those wife and kids ain’t gonna save themselves, you know.
2461d ago
Skyscraper is little more than a faster-higher-stronger amalgamation of Die Hard and The Towering Inferno.

“Skyscraper” Sure Has a Lot of Mass Shootings for a Family-Time Adventure Movie
2461d ago
There’s no better time than summer for a fun, brainless thriller. All you need is three key ingredients: a charismatic hero, a hateable villain and a snappy screenplay.
