The next chapter in the film franchise features the coolest private eye on any New York City block. JJ, aka John Shaft Jr. (Jessie Usher). He may be a cyber security expert with a degree from MIT, but to uncover the truth behind his best friend’s untimely death, he needs an education only his dad can provide. Absent throughout JJ’s youth, the legendary locked-and-loaded John Shaft (Samuel L. Jackson) agrees to help his progeny navigate Harlem’s heroin-infested underbelly. And while JJ’s own FBI analyst’s badge may clash with his dad’s trademark leather coat, there’s no denying family. Besides, Shaft’s got an agenda of his own, and a score to settle that’s professional and personal.

Less blaxploitation than buddy action comedy, a rudely conventional new 'Shaft' pairs Samuel L. Jackson's mythic detective with a by-the-book son.

Shaft is also funny, with a sharp, fast-paced humor (though one transphobic joke is a tone-deaf clunker). And it’s always enjoyable to watch Jackson walking around while dropping f-bombs (and mother-f-bombs) all over the place.

With a greener blend of heart and humor, Shaft safely ushers in the vigilante detective for modern audiences, though safety never seemed to be a factor before.

How did a bad mother (shut your mouth) turn into a bad dad joke?

Times sure have changed since the old Shaft made women swoon by simply treating them like shit. As for the new Shaft, is he still a bad mutha? Shut your mouth.

Cool New York City detective John Shaft is back again in, you guessed it, Shaft, with a modern update that goes completely sideways in all the wrong ways. This Shaft is a bad mother all right, and it'd be better if he just shut his mouth.

Who's the cat that won't cop out when there's danger all about? Probably not this silly version of the iconic private eye.

Ultimately, the only truly retro thing about this weirdly reactionary potboiler is its politics.

This movie is “ruin your childhood” bad, right down to the hideous auto-tuned end credits song they chose to use instead of the original “Theme From Shaft.” I say this flick Shaft is a bad movie. Shut yo’ mouth.
