Mark (portrayed by Carl Boehm), employed as a focus puller at a film studio, moonlights by taking glamour shots in a dimly lit studio above a newsstand. However, when night descends, a dark side emerges: he becomes a malevolent killer. Obsessed with capturing authentic expressions of terror, he prowls the streets with his camera, a compulsion rooted deeply in the traumatic experiences inflicted by his scientist father during his childhood. Mark's path soon crosses with Helen's (Anna Massey), who resides with her blind mother (Maxine Audley) in the apartment below his. The question looms: how long will it be before he directs his sinister photographic attention to her? "Peeping Tom", the visionary Michael Powell's follow-up after a series of acclaimed 1940s and 50s collaborations with screenwriter Emeric Pressburger, cast a shadow on Powell's once-celebrated career. The film faced much criticism upon release, leading to its unavailability for a significant period. However, in retrospect, "Peeping Tom" has been heralded as a turning point in genre cinema, its intricate portrayal of voyeurism and psychopathy laying the groundwork for the subsequent rise of the slasher genre.
