As much as individual scenes feel well-constructed though, My Blind Brother feels a bit programmatic in the big picture ways it hits the beats of the romantic comedy. It’s far more honest than your average romantic comedy, but it’s hard to shake that the charm of the script sometimes reads as slightness more than any intended atmosphere.

Kroll and Slate, though, give performances that have the opposite effect. They aren't the best people, but the relative goodness of their intentions is never in doubt. "My Blind Brother" puts these characters through the comic wringer, but the humor is founded on the characters and their flaws, not the circumstances.

The best material gives the excellent Scott and Kroll plenty of love-hate energy: Robbie’s condescension, Bill’s passive-aggressiveness. It will look all too familiar to anyone who isn’t an only child.

Though My Blind Brother clearly isn’t aiming for the feel-good realm, the emotions never ring true enough to make any of the purposely flawed leads relatable, never mind likable. Its tired indie trappings (arrested development, dull cynicism) turn the film into its own kind of marathon.

It’s something of a cheap out to make the blind character mostly unsympathetic as a reason to excuse the predictable reunion of the film’s inevitable romantic leads, and a braver version of “My Blind Brother” would’ve dared to make Robbie kinder, placing an actual conflict at the core of the story. Instead, everyone dances around the feelings of a boor — because he’s blind! — and the routine gets tired fast.
