Based on Philip Reeve’s novel about futuristic moving cities doing battle, this thrilling visionary tale is the best kind of bonkers

Peter Jackson's 'Mortal Engines' dazzles with spectacle, falls flat with character

In a post-apocalyptic future, mobile cities on huge caterpillar tracks roam the landscape, gobbling up smaller towns for their resources. Londoner Tom (Robert Sheehan) is proud of his home until he meets Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar) and learns that London’s hero Thaddeus Valentine (Hugo Weaving) may not be as upstanding as he thought.

As these things go, Mortal Engines offers a fair amount of fun.

Peter Jackson produced and co-wrote this post-apocalyptic story based on the young adult novels by Philip Reeve.

Ultimately, Mortal Engines is the kind of non-summer blockbuster that seems destined to find a few ardent defenders. Too unfocused to be good, too packed full of ideas to be entirely bad, it should become quite the cable television staple in just a few years' time.

Visually, it's busy, hefty and propulsive, but emotionally and thematically, it's as light as air. These engines could have used a bit more in the tank.

A mechanical, soulless dystopian theme park ride to nowhere

There was a time when post-apocalyptic films roamed the landscape, pillaging better movies for spare parts. That time is now, and that movie is “Mortal Engines,” in which a ravaged Earth’s population now inhabits cities on wheels.

Never mind that the whole concept of the movie is like someone decided to take Terry Gilliam’s “The Crimson Permanent Assurance” way more seriously than it was ever intended. I did like the near-cavernous tread tracks that Hester and Tom had to run around in on their Way to Love.

In this tired chase narrative, which barely even pretends to investigate what’s interesting about its gonzo steampunk Star Wars scenario because it’s too busy trying to get to the next big set piece, only the bold stand out.

This new movie by the ‘Lord of the Rings’ team is a bloated, derivative mess
