In "Lion," five-year-old Saroo finds himself alone and travelling on the wrong train away from his home in Northern India. Frightened and bewildered, he winds up thousands of kilometers away, in chaotic Kolkata. Somehow he survives living on the streets, dodging all sorts of terrors in the process. Eventually ending up in an orphanage, Saroo is adopted by an Australian couple, and finds safety and love as he grows up in Hobart. Not wanting to hurt his adoptive parents' feelings, he buries his past, his emotional need for reunification and his hope of ever finding his lost mother and brother. But a chance meeting with some fellow Indians reawakens his secret yearnings. With just a small store of memories, and the help of Google Earth, Saroo embarks on a quest... the search for where he came from.

Dev Patel plays a real-life figure separated from his family in central India at age five and reunited with them a quarter-century later in this uplifting drama that also stars Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara.

A 5-year-old Indian boy who finds himself on an accidental quest across the world, and the trip home he makes 25 years later, give the touching drama Lion its hopeful spirit and affecting sensibility.

Saroo is played dazzlingly by Dev Patel, who gives his richest performance since Mira Nair’s “The Namesake.”

Lion doesn’t quite make its true story roar.

This is no doubt a fascinating story to tell in Lion, but the potential is never met. Despite its promise, the drama ends up feeling like one big Google Earth advertisement with no sense of culture whatsoever. If anything, pending stronger material, it does prove the director has a bright future ahead of him.

While Lion isn’t the kind of drama that demands risky storytelling, it is one that has within it a whole world of emotional topography that is disappointingly scrolled over instead of mapped out.

Lion‘s faults of structure and pacing might limit its power, but in stretches it still roars.

The true story of a man using Google Earth to track down his childhood home is often slight, but accomplished direction and themes of racial identity keep it on track.

The first part of “Lion,” Garth Davis’s unabashedly tear-jerking movie about a remarkable real-world incident, has some of the scary, wondrous feeling of a fairy tale.

Saroo Brierley's memoir A Long Way Home examines, in its uncertain prose, one of the signal concerns of our age: How do those of us who have grown up in relative comfort square our good luck with the lot of the rest of the world?

As is proved by documentary footage at the end, Garth Davis’s film is based on a true story; though wrenching, there is barely enough of it to fill the dramatic space, and the second half is a slow and muted affair after the Dickensian punch of the first.

Even Nicole Kidman’s lovely performance can’t obscure this film’s odd ideas about well-meaning white parents and their obliviousness to their adoptive children’s background.
