Stephen Chow applies his zany touch to Chinese classic Journey To The West.

The title refers to the classic 16th-century Chinese novel, but this is hardly a faithful adaptation; instead, Chow uses elements of the source material as a springboard to, among other things, stage a dialogue between two different poles of heroism.

An often delightful blend of fantasy, action, comedy and romance loosely derived from a famous 16th-century Chinese novel, this is the first film from Stephen Chow (best known in this country for “Kung Fu Hustle’’) since he was dumped from his Hollywood debut as director of the abysmal would-be blockbuster “Green Hornet’’ (2011) and also replaced in the co-starring role of Kato.

One rule of comedy is to make it big. Instead of a single pie to the face, try a fusillade and a slippery shoving match. Rather than a couple of anchormen trading insults, why not a street fight? And when it comes to a battle royal, you really can’t top Buddha for administering a beat down.

By turns daffy and dazzling, awkward and artful, "Journey to the West" takes an ancient tale and gives it contemporary flair.

Visuals are more dazzling than the storytelling in “Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons.” A qualified return to form for Hong Kong hitmaker Stephen Chow (“Kung Fu Hustle) after mushy sci-fier “CJ7,” this mostly entertaining action-fantasy-comedy about a demon hunter soars when pyrotechnics take centerstage, but is less successful when the focus switches to words.

Having followed up his giddy 2004 martial arts comedy Kung Fu Hustle with 2008's risible E.T.–inspired dud CJ7, director Stephen Chow returns to more familiar terrain with Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, a Buddhist fantasy adventure that unevenly hybridizes hectic combat, sappy romance, and slapstick humor.
