In the rare sci-fi sequel that takes its time to go deep, 'Arrival' director Denis Villeneuve picks up 30 years after the stylish cult classic left off, engaging with the existential concerns of androids.

Officer KD6-3.7 (Gosling) is a Blade Runner: a specialised detective/assassin tasked with hunting down bio-engineered humans known as replicants — mainly the old, discontinued but long-lived Nexus 8 models still at large. After encountering a Nexus 8 (Bautista) on a protein farm, K discovers a buried box of bones which reveal a potentially world-shaking secret. One which requires him to hunt down an entirely new kind of quarry...

That Blade Runner 2049 is a more than worthy sequel to Scott’s first film means it crosses the highest bar anyone could have reasonably set for it, and it distinguishes Villeneuve – who’s masterminded all of this, somehow, since making Arrival – as the most exciting filmmaker working at his level today.

Blade Runner 2049, the superb new sequel by Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival”), doesn’t just honor that legacy, but, arguably, surpasses it, with a smart, grimly lyrical script (by Fancher and Michael Green of the top-notch “Logan”); bleakly beautiful cinematography (by Roger Deakins); and an even deeper dive into questions of the soul.

Blade Runner 2049 is a sequel that never should have happened, but it’s defied all odds to become one of the best ever.

Impeccably cool Blade Runner 2049 is a ravishing visual feast.

Over 163 stylish minutes, “Blade Runner 2049” wrestles with nothing less than what it means to be human, serving as a beautiful thematic companion to Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner,” a film that redefined a genre.

Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford and director Denis Villeneuve turn this follow-up into a bold, "visual feast" that more than lives up to the original.

Inarguably 2049 is an intellectually challenging film that rewards viewers with a host of new and interesting ideas, vis-à-vis man and machine, past and future, and where “the self” resides. The long wait is over, and Villeneuve’s film rewards fans’ patience in all manner of ways.

Mr. Villeneuve’s film, by contrast, is a carefully engineered narrative puzzle, and its power dissipates as the pieces snap into place. As sumptuous and surprising as it is from one scene to the next, it lacks the creative excess, the intriguing opacity and the haunting residue of its predecessor.

Is it even possible for a mere movie to live up to Ridley Scott’s 1982 masterpiece?

If you have two X chromosomes, or know and like someone who does, “Blade Runner 2049” may not be the movie for you.

Even if Blade Runner 2049 never forgets where it came from, it somehow keeps losing its way. The picture’s moodiness is excessively manicured; this thing is gritty only in a premeditated way. Mostly, it feels like a capacious handbag, designed with perhaps too many extra compartments to hold every cool visual idea Villeneuve can dream up.

Blade Runner 2049 is so terrified of disreputability that it renders itself dead from the waist down.
