David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike shine in a rousing political romance.

Interracial romance between British clerk and African royalty highights historical flashpoint – and offers primo acting showcase.
2985d ago
Twenty years before the U.S. Supreme Court put the marriage of Mildred and Richard Loving on trial, the fate of another interracial couple made headlines around the world: Seretse Khama (portrayed with fierce empathy by David Oyelowo) came to London in 1946 to study law; Ruth Williams (a defiant Rosamund Pike) worked as a clerk.

After a rough start, then, the film turns into something truly engaging and crowd-pleasing. Asante’s films, at least in this vein, aren’t ever going to be terribly fashionable, but she has a feel for this kind of film that few since Richard Attenborough have been able to match, but with a voice and perspective that adds so much more too.
2985d ago
While her filmmaking style can sometimes come across as staid, [Ms. Asante's] sense of pace is always acute. The best reason to see A United Kingdom, however, is the performance by Mr. Oyelowo.

A strange, shameful chapter of history is dusted off by Amma Asante to make this earnestly stirring Empire drama.

Late 1940s London, and law student Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo) falls for office worker Ruth (Rosamund Pike). But he is heir to the leadership of the Bamangwato people, and their union draws the ire of both them and the British Empire.

The Amma Asante film's broad sociopolitical overview is balanced by the intimate attention paid to the leads.
2985d ago
In the end, the wonderful performances merely prove part of a serviceable historical drama with a desire it can’t quite fulfill of being more.
2985d ago
David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike outshine the filmmaking in A United Kingdom.
2985d ago
A demure romance with Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo, and Martin Zandvliet’s film about land mines.
2985d ago
Although the relationship lacks a certain fire, the acting is superb.

For a movie about two people who loved each other so deeply, they risked losing everything to be together—their families, homes, even their countries—“A United Kingdom” plays it frustratingly safe.
2985d ago
A stirring interrogation of British identity that just deserves more.
2985d ago
A touching love story that gets sidelined by a tiresome intra-family African political dispute, “A United Kingdom” has a big heart that beats far too slowly.
2985d ago
David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike play the mixed-race power couple whose love challenged apartheid in this overly simplistic historical romance.
2985d ago
In the late 1940s, a young black king returns from England to his native land in southern Africa with a white bride.
2985d ago
In director Amma Asante’s epic political romance A United Kingdom, David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike star as Seretse and Ruth Khama, the interracial royal couple who stunned the world when they fought to rule the country that would become the Republic of Botswana.
2985d ago
A United Kingdom is well-intentioned, with impassioned performances from Oyelowo and Pike, but it's executed as drily and inoffensively as so many middling Brit period dramas.
2985d ago
Toronto 2016: Amma Asante‘s real-life story of an interracial marriage can be stirring, but it’s also very old-fashioned.
