I hate to be the guy to judge a book by its cover, but I admittedly did just that with Gaby Dellal‘s 3 Generations. It depicts the “unconventional” family of three generations with Susan Sarandon‘s Dodo, Naomi Watts as her daughter Maggie, and Elle Fanning‘s transitioning grandson/son respectfully named Ray (formerly Ramona).

3 Generations of good actors are let down by this long-shelved family drama.
2909d ago
About Ray is not, in the end, a triumph, but is still good and necessary viewing for its subject matter.
2909d ago
Ray is courageous just for making the decision to change sexes. The film — which, by the way, includes a surprising amount of droll humor — would be better if it trusted the audience to recognize this, rather than piling ordeals worthy of the Labors of Hercules onto its protagonist.

Elle Fanning plays a transgender teen in this enjoyably lightweight yet occasionally contrived comedy-drama.
2909d ago
A teen’s transition takes a backseat to the family members (played by Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon) who must learn how to cope.
2909d ago
It may feature three A-list actresses and a torn-from-the-headlines issue in trans rights – but this drama is pure old-fashioned Hollywood bullshit.
2909d ago
A movie can mean well but not necessarily work well. Being tasteful can get in the way of being truthful. Such is the frustrating case of “3 Generations,” which takes on the topic of gender dysphoria with a talented cast but not much to say.
2909d ago
Elle Fanning stars opposite Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon as a transgender New York teen impatient to begin hormone replacement therapy.
2909d ago
Elle Fanning adds depth to her performance as a teen transitioning but the family drama around her fails to truly captivate.
2909d ago
A committed (and controversial) performance from Elle Fanning as a high school kid born Ramona — but identifying as Ray — is diced up and short-shrifted in this muddled comedy-drama.
2909d ago
The main character is too often pushed to the sidelines so that the filmmakers can indulge tired family-drama tropes.
